The Official Michael Regan NBA GOAT Rankings – Another Big Chunk of Work

35 min read

We’re picking up with advanced stats. I was having trouble getting this part onto the original article, so that was probably a sign to both give up on having just one and also to be more concise here. There’s a lot to say about advanced metrics and what they’re worth, but most of that is beyond our scope. What matters is two things.

1) Advanced metrics are useful and important. They take the separate areas of the game that we’ve been running through and combine them into one number. It’s worth noting that not every advanced metric has the same exact goal or output – PER, for example, is essentially an attempt to measure how efficient a player is at producing some sort of measurable output on the court (hence Player Efficiency Rating) – but the general idea of better players will tend to have a higher number in this overall metric tends to hold true. There is obviously no such thing as a perfect formula – as the existence of so many different metrics that have the same overarching goal would suggest – but they do give us a perfectly adequate way of determining player impact. Let’s take a look at this year’s top 10 in various advanced stats –

PER: Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, LeBron, KD, Trae, Luka, Gobert, Ja, KAT

Win Shares: Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Gobert, KAT, Trae, Robert Williams, Tatum, Paul, Jimmy

BPM: Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Luka, LeBron, KD, Jimmy, Ja, Steph, Robert Williams

VORP: Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Luka, LeBron, KD, Trae, Tatum, Steph, Dejounte Murray

That’s a pretty solid picture of who the best and most consistent guys were during this year’s regular season. You’d be hard pressed to find someone arguing against a top three of Jokic, Giannis, and Embiid with guys like Luka, LeBron, KD, Jimmy, Trae, and Steph in the next tier. Rudy Gobert helping lift up what is largely a corpse of a defense without him and then playing very efficient (though certainly limited) basketball on the other end is going to give him an edge in these metrics even if you wouldn’t necessarily pick him to start your franchise. Again, the stats aren’t perfect, but they do a pretty dang good job of separating the cream of the crop at the top and giving us gradients to follow all the way down.

2) We will only be using win shares (and the various ways we can manipulate or split up that stat) and PER. There’s a very simple reason for this; they’re the only ones that go back past 1974. We’ve done some maneuvering for other stats like turnovers, blocks, steals, and three-point percentages to still include those, but this is a bit of a different beast. I’d love to use VORP and BPM; it just doesn’t make sense to put a bunch of players in the middle on a stat of overall impact (unlike a smaller and distinct area of the game like three-point shooting) when we have a decent idea of the area they’d probably be in. It’s not fair to someone like Wilt to stick him in 75th in BPM while some of the guys he’s competing with at the top are getting their full due, especially since these are stats that we’d like to attribute a little more importance to than steal percentage or turnovers per game. The only advanced metrics that we can properly use and value are win shares and PER, so we’ll use those and take it as it is rather than trying to mess around with metrics that we don’t have full access to. This is the main reason why the advanced metric categories aren’t getting too many goat points. There just aren’t that many that we have at our disposal.

Offensive Advanced Metrics (3)

Subcategories:

  • Offensive Win Shares (2)
  • Offensive Win Shares per 48 (1)

A few notes here. I will do my best to not butcher the explanation:

  • A win share is just what it sounds like – an attempt to measure how many wins a player is responsible for helping their team get. The formula used to match up with real wins exactly (so the players of a team with 50 wins would have a cumulative win share total of 50), but the updated figures will align closely rather than matching exactly with that real wins number.
  • Negative win shares do exist, but don’t take that to mean that 0 is the average. The vast majority of players will have a positive output here since we’re obviously adding up towards a win number that is very positive, even for pretty bad teams.
  • There is a team component to this – the more your team wins, the more win shares that are available. Of course, you can also take this in a loop. The teams that win more have more win shares but they also have the better players who deserve more win shares but they also play on the better teams that win more and…It is certainly true that Robert Williams would have more win shares in Boston than he would if you just put him on the Rockets roster. It’s easier to do the job when you have more talent around you. But the better players, which is a lot of the guys we’re looking at, will hit their spots on the advanced metrics regardless. Just look at Trae in Atlanta. Does he have more win shares on a better team? Possibly. Does he still have a lot of win shares on a very mediocre team because his offensive impact is massive regardless? Yes. Might it actually be smaller on a better team since there are more players capable of sharing the load? Potentially.
  • Win shares, like VORP, are a cumulative stat, which means that they build over time. Think of the difference between total points (something like win shares) and points per game (something like BPM). Two players can both have 100 career win shares, but it might have taken the first guy 10,000 more minutes to get there. So there is a clear component of longevity woven in here, and, to help balance that out, we will also look at offensive win shares per 48 minutes. That is not a widely available stat, so I will be calculating it myself. All that takes is messing around with a few columns of data to do some division, but it’s worth noting just to mention that, like with minutes played, there might be a slight rounding error. The guy who’s supposed to be in 55th will still be in 55th. He might just have 0.123 offensive win shares per 48 instead of 0.122.
  • I won’t waste time trying to explain the offensive win shares formula. It’s not going to help me or you. Better explanations are out there if you want to work through them. But we are essentially taking various simple counting stats (like points) to measure individual points produced and then comparing it to various league standards of pace and offensive output to get our result.

Could we theoretically adjust for era here? Probably. Is that something that I could figure out how to do? Absolutely not. To offensive win shares we go. There are two goat points at stake (Mark Eaton finished with negative offensive win shares and is going to lose goat points here which is tough but probably fair) –

Next up is offensive win shares per 48. This is a pretty simple calculation. We take total minutes played and divide it by 48. We then take total offensive win shares and divide it by the new minutes number to get offensive win shares per 48 minutes. There is one goat point on the line.

Defensive Advanced Metrics (3)

Subcategories:

  • Defensive Win Shares (2)
  • Defensive Win Shares per 48 (1)

Switch offense for defense, and we’ll be doing the exact same thing here. Defensive advanced metrics are notoriously tricky since they often rely on steals, blocks, rebounds, and other simple counting stats that aren’t necessarily indicative of strong defense on their own. Defense, more than offense, is a role-based proposition where the greatest efforts might come from those that don’t necessarily reap statistical benefits or even pretty highlights. But this is what we have, so we’ll use it. There is still something to be said for these metrics, even if they aren’t perfect. Something being difficult to measure isn’t an excuse to toss out attempts to do so entirely, which people from a variety of perspectives can do with defensive metrics.

We’ll start with simple career defensive win shares.

Cumulative Goat Points Leaderboard

Some notes –

  • LeBron holds on to first, but Wilt is right on his back
  • MJ stays in top seven, but KG and Tim Duncan move past him
  • The top 25 is filled with familiar names – Stockton, Kobe, Shaq, Dirk, Chuck, Larry, CP3, Oscar, Magic, etc.
  • Bill Russell makes a big move into the top 25 after his premier category
  • Steph stays in top 50, AD reaches top 55, Giannis and Jokic sit right outside top 60
  • AI and Melo, two players without the longevity weaknesses of the guys above, sit down around 50
  • Isaiah Thomas still pretty far down at 71
  • Dame falls outside of top 90, where he’s joined by KAT (down to 99), Kawhi (115), Dennis Rodman (125), Draymond (147), and Klay (second-to-last in 156th)
Overall Advanced Metrics (8)

Subcategories:

  • Win Shares (3)
  • Win Shares per 48 (2)
  • PER (3)

This is a big category, much like longevity. How does everyone fare when we look at metrics focused on an even wider view of the game? Total win shares are simply offensive win shares plus defensive win shares, so I won’t go any deeper into that. It’s a good measure of someone’s ability to contribute on both sides. PER stands for Player Efficiency Rating. We can define it as a measure of a player’s production on a per-minutes basis, and it takes both positive and negative stats into account. The league average is 15. A slightly longer but still brief description of the stat from its creator, John Hollinger, can be found here. PER is perhaps as much an example of a statistic not meant to be a clear measure of player impact as you’ll find out of all the “overall advanced metrics”. It is, again, a look at simple and pure production rather than an attempt to say that Player A is more impactful than Player B. There is, of course, something to be said for impact from production, but that line is more indirect than direct here.

We’ll start with cumulative win shares.

Cumulative Goat Points Leaderboard

Some notes –

  • LeBron and Wilt still in an incredibly tight race at the top with Kareem in a relatively close third and Karl Malone and MJ rounding out a pretty clear top five. There’s no real surprise in there. Malone’s legacy has obviously been altered by irredeemable off-court actions and will suffer as we move on to the second half of our categories, but it’s hard to argue with his statistical resume.
  • There really aren’t any surprises in the top 25 as a whole. Some might point to Artis Gilmore at 19, but the man averaged a very efficient 19 and 12 across eighteen seasons and led the ABA in defensive win shares four years in a row. He’s an all-time great.
  • Russ sits at 35 and Steph at 37 through our regular season stats portion. That will obviously change; Steph has a decent amount left in his trophy cabinet. But it’s perhaps a reminder to send a little more respect in Westbrook’s direction.
  • AD (45), Jokic (53), and Giannis (57) all sit in the top 60 despite some pretty significant barriers in terms of longevity. It will be interesting to see how far Giannis can climb given what he’s accomplished on an accolades-basis in recent years.
  • AI down at 54 is interesting, especially considering that he doesn’t have the most room to climb moving forward. The same is even more true for Melo at 58.
  • Kawhi has climbed to 77 and still has more room to move up given his accolades. Leonard is as fascinating of a player as it gets in the all-time debate given the stark disparity between his regular season availability and volume and all that he has done in the postseason.
  • Both Tony Parker and Manu sit right around 80th. I don’t think many would argue for them to be too high on the all-time list, but there is a comparison there to the oft more-acclaimed duo that plays alongside Steph in Draymond and Klay. They both sit in the bottom nine right now.
  • Bob Cousy (97) sits significantly ahead of the “wizard” that is Kyrie Irving (124).
  • Isiah Thomas is all the way down at 102 and has quite a bit of space between him and greener all-time pastures. We’ll see where he finishes.
Regular Season Awards (10)

Subcategories:

  • MVPs (3)
  • Top 3 MVP Finishes (2)
  • All-Star Appearances (1)
  • DPOY (1.5)
  • All-Defense Teams (1)
  • All-NBA Teams (1.5)

There are a lot of flaws to regular season awards. Players can be rewarded for reputation more than actual quality (all-defense teams are a notorious place for this). Even today, a lot of voters probably don’t watch many of the potentially deserving players more than once or twice a year. That gap between the pre-determined elite and those who play good basketball in relative national anonymity was likely far wider in past eras too. There’s also the obvious truth that not all awards are equal. Some years and some eras simply have less competition than others. A player could win zero MVPs but still have a few seasons that were probably better than at least a few of the MVP seasons throughout league history (peak Chris Paul playing alongside Kobe and LeBron is a decent example of this). And, of course, different eras have different number of teams. It’s a heck of a lot easier to be one of the five, fifteen, or thirty best players in an eight team league than in a thirty team league. There’s voter fatigue as well that can come into play. Lastly, most awards don’t run all the way back to the beginning of the league, which puts a few players from earlier eras at a pretty severe disadvantage in this category. DPOY goes back to 1983. MVP goes back to the mid 50s. George Mikan, for example, is going to get hit here and there’s not a whole lot that can be done about it. So the ten points at stake is not my way of saying that regular season awards are as important as anything. It’s just the fact that there are quite a few regular season awards, and we need to dish out at least a few points to some of them. Because, despite their flaws, regular season awards do hold merit as a good representation of who stands out in any given season – and boasting many of them is a good way of representing an elite run of seasons. MVPs are particularly important (and we also balance out era-based competitive differences by looking at top three finishes). Being the DPOY matters, even if we can say there’s no perfect way to select who that is in any given season. And showing up in an All-Star game or on an All-NBA team is far from insignificant, no matter the flaws in the selection process. We can limit the individual importance of these accolades to control for their imperfections, but they need to be included in any discussion of greatness. One last note – I’m not including Rookie of the Year or All-Rookie teams. I thought about giving them about half a point and including them just to have them there, but I just don’t see the point. Being better than other rookies in your rookie year doesn’t have much of anything to do with your ultimate legacy.

One last note – there is theoretically adjusting that can be done for era here given that there have been different numbers of teams and thus players in the league across time. That obviously has an impact on one’s ability to win awards. But given other factors at play like general league competitiveness and the fact that a few early players are at a disadvantage in this category given the absence of some of these awards in early league history, I’ll just leave it as is without making any adjustments. One more last note – ABA regular season awards count the same as NBA awards here. There’s one distinction to the All-NBA team subcategory that I’ll describe when we get there, but everything is the same across the two leagues in terms of how I count the accolades otherwise.

We can start with MVPs, which should be pretty self-explanatory. We’re following the same method of scoring where your goat points are based on the percentage of the best player’s value that yours reaches. There are 3 goat points on the line here. One note that is obvious but still worth registering – we’re going to start getting a lot of 0s in some of these accolade and postseason accomplishment categories, which will obviously be a change from what we’ve seen so far. Instead of taking up a bunch of space with guys who are getting 0 goat points, I won’t include those players. So anyone that you don’t see has 0. And we’ll see some more separation from the pack when we get to the next cumulative leaderboard. Only 36 players won an MVP.

MVPs

We can then do top 3 MVP finishes. Why include these? For one thing, finishing in the top three in MVP voting in any given year is pretty impressive on its own. But this also widens the scope a little bit in recognizing players for elite seasons, and it helps us to some degree with the problem of players who have MVP-worthy seasons in an unfortunately competitive year. Obviously the top three cutoff is arbitrary, but it makes as much sense as any. There are two goat points on the line here, and there are 69 players who finished top three in MVP voting at least once.

ASG appearances

Then we have All-Defense appearances. There is one goat point on the line. There’s an extra step here since there’s a first team and a second team rather than just a single yes-or-no option. So any All-Defense first team appearance is worth two points while a second team appearance is worth one. The sum of the value of all of those appearances is the number you’ll see here. We also, coincidentally, have sixty-nine players that made at least one All-Defense team.

All-Defense appearances

We finish with All-NBA appearances. There are 1.5 goat points available. The scoring system is a little more complicated here. For All-NBA appearances, you get 3 points for a first team showing, 2 points for a second team showing, and 1 point for a third team showing. For All-ABA appearances (where only two teams existed rather than three), you get 2 points for a first team showing and 1 point for a second team showing. We then do the same add it all up and there’s your final number thing we did above for All-Defense. 128 of our players made at least one All-NBA (or ABA) appearance.

Cumulative Goat Points Leaderboard

Some notes –

  • Kareem narrowly grabs the top spot from LeBron for the moment
  • Wilt and MJ still within reach
  • There still really aren’t any big surprises in the top 30-40
  • Steph, Russ, and Giannis sit at 30-32 and Steph (especially) and Giannis should have some kick left in them
  • KD sits a little further ahead of that trio at 23, and Harden is right behind him at 25
  • Paul Pierce really didn’t have much in the way of regular season awards, but he still sits in 35th. Pierce has seemingly become an easy target in recent years, but he had a really nice career
  • Jokic (46) is still hanging around, though there’s not much of a postseason resume to speak of with him
  • AD is also floating around the top 50 at 48. Davis got plenty of flack for his NBA 75 inclusion, but maybe that was somewhat unwarranted. That said, Dwight Howard is 26th, and that direct comparison is where most of the criticism came from
  • Kawhi’s lack of regular seasons awards stalled his charge a bit. He’s at 59 ahead of some categories that should benefit him
  • Melo sits at 61 and doesn’t have the greatest playoff resume. He’s potentially at risk of a finish outside the top 75
  • So is Dame, another controversial NBA 75 member, who’s in 74th
  • Isiah Thomas sits in 85th and still has plenty of work to do to reach a more respectable finish
  • Kyrie (125) is now more than 60 spots back of Bob Cousy (60)
  • Both Draymond and Klay remain in the bottom nine. We’ll see how much ground they can make up down the stretch

This one is starting to get a little wonky on me too, so I’ll cut early and head onto our third piece, which can be found here. Most of the categories that remain will involve playoff accomplishments, play, etc.
